How to Process Salary Sacrifice in a Pay Run

Overview

Learn how to process salary sacrifice arrangements in a pay run using Myaccountant. This includes super and non-super salary sacrifice setup, plus steps to manually add RESC for ATO reporting.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Understand Salary Sacrifice Types

Salary sacrifice is when an employee agrees to reduce their gross salary in return for a benefit. The two most common types are:

  • Salary Sacrifice to Superannuation (must be reported as Reportable Employer Super Contribution or RESC)
  • Salary Sacrifice to Other Benefits(e.g. car, laptop, health insurance)
  1. Add the Salary Sacrifice Pay Item

For Salary Sacrifice to Super:

  1. Open the employee’s pay run.
  2. Click Add Pay Item.
  3. If not already created, click New Pay Item.
  4. Create a new pay item:
    • Name: e.g. “Salary Sacrifice – Super”
    • Payment Type: Select Salary Sacrifice – Superannuation
  5. Click Save, then select the item and click Add.

For Salary Sacrifice to Other Benefits:

  1. Repeat the steps above, but select SalarySacrifice – Other Employee Benefits as the payment type.
  1. Enter Salary Sacrifice Amount
  1. Click the pencil icon next to the pay item.
  2. In Qty/Hours, enter 1.
  3. In Rate, enter the full sacrifice amount.
  4. Click Save.
  1. Add RESC Pay Item Separately (Important for ATO Reporting)

Myaccountant does not automatically tag super salary sacrifice as RESC. To ensure accurate STP reporting, you must:

  1. Click Add Pay Item again.
  2. Click New Pay Item and create:
    • Name: e.g. “RESC” or “Reportable Super”
    • Payment Type: Select RESC (Reportable Employer Super Contribution)
  3. Click Save, then select this item and add it to the same pay run.
  4. Enter the same amount in Qty/Hours = 1, and Rate = same amount as salary sacrifice super.
  5. Click Save.

This ensures the sacrificed super is separately reported under RESC in STP lodgement.

  1. Finalise and Submit to ATO
  1. Review the employee’s pay summary.
  2. Click Finalise.
  3. Use the Submit to ATO action to lodge via STP.

Your RESC and salary sacrifice amounts will now be correctly reported to the ATO.

Tips :

  • Both the Salary Sacrifice – Super and RESC pay items can be reported in the same pay run.
  • Salary sacrifice reduces gross income but must still be reported to the ATO as RESC.
  • Always keep a signed salary sacrifice agreement between you and the employee on file.
