STP Actions Explained: Submit, Update, or Send Replacement

Overview

This article explains the differences between Submit, Update, and Send Replacement STP actions in Myaccountant. Learn when and how to use each action to ensure accurate lodgement to the ATO.

What do Submit, Update & Replacement Mean?

Submit (New Event)

  • Used for first-time lodgement of a pay run.
  • Sends employer and employees’ year-to-date (YTD)payment and withholding figures to the ATO.
  • This is the default STP action for newly finalised pay runs.

Update

  • Used to correct specific employee-level data after lodgement.
  • Ideal when correcting tax, super, or personal pay details without changing gross payment totals.
  • Submits only the affected employee data.

Send Replacement (Full File Replacement)

  • Replaces the entire original STP report.
  • Needed when correcting employer-level totals(like W1 Gross or W2 Tax), or making broad pay adjustments across multiple employees.
  • Instructed by the ATO to fix misclassification, branch or ABN updates, and gross/YTD corrections.

How It Works in Myaccountant

  1. Unlock and edit lodged pay run (if required).
  2. Finalise the revised pay run.
  3. Use the Submit, Update, or Send Replacement action.
  4. Myaccountant sends corrected STP info to the ATO.
  5. STP status updates to Success, Pending, orFailed (may take up to 24 hours).

Tips:

  • You have 14 days to correct employee-level errors via Update or Replacement within the same financial year, avoiding penalties.
  • If you adjust employer-level totals, ensure corrections reflect in your activity statement where necessary.
  • If you change payroll software or employees’Payroll IDs mid‑year, Replacement may be needed to transfer YTD amounts correctly.
